Parent Group Coordinators

Sheri Sands and Meghan Jones will be stepping down as Parent Group Coordinators at the end of this school year. Dawn McCloskey and Jacki Munhall have volunteered to be the co-coordinators for next school year. Thanks for stepping up Dawn and Jacki!! We are excited to see what you have to offer the Parent Group!

Current Year Successes

We’ve been successful in some areas:

  • Book fair
  • Winter charity drive
  • Teacher appreciation week- it was great having the lower elementary kids make chocolate bars; the children love being directly involved.
  • Room moms – they have worked with the teachers to get parents involved in the classrooms, specifically: reading, sharing about different cultures, cooking, etc.

Things that can be improved upon:

  • Fall event – because of inclement weather, it was poorly attended. Next year, we need to have a rain date and have advance ticket sales to ensure people attend.
  • Teacher appreciation week – In past years, children brought supplies/flowers to teachers, i.e. one flower each for their teachers and they were combined with their classmates’ flowers to make a complete bouquet. This allowed all the children to be directly involved in giving things to their teachers. Next year, try to include things for kids to give to teachers directly.
  • Early release social activities – there were a couple of get-togethers (i.e.: families met at a park with kids) on early release days, but nothing consistent throughout the year.
  • Room moms – in the past, some of the room moms coordinated social events that were held outside the class room. This enabled classmates and parents to get to know one another better. Suggestion: have a picnic at a neighborhood park or someone’s house/yard several times a year.

Playground Equipment

The Parent Group purchased two sand/water tables for the playground. A family donated some outdoor toys: hula hoops, jump ropes, Frisbees, and a Hydro Catch (Velcro pad and tennis ball) and observed that there weren’t any other toys in the shed. It was discussed that families might have old yoga balls, footballs, etc. that can be donated to the school. If you have any outside toys that the kids might enjoy, please contact Becky.

2010-2011 School Year:

New Parent Group Co-Coordinators
Dawn McCloskey and Jacki Munhall (dawn@ultraorganized.com and jackimunhall@me.com) will take over as co-coordinators beginning in August.

Parent Group Meetings
In place of monthly meetings (that have not been well attended the past two years); we will concentrate on having three socials – probably breakfasts in someone’s home – in August, January and May.

Communicating with Parents
Kathy Sexton will look into other options of communicating with parents, for example: Yahoo or Facebook. This will enable parents to be involved with the Parent Group from the comfort of their own homes.

Events
We will probably continue having a limited amount of events:

  • Book Fairs
  • Fall event – maybe attempt Kinsley Farms again, but have a rain date?
  • Winter charity drive
  • Teacher appreciation week
  • Spring event

Next Parent Group Meeting

The meetings are held at the Starbucks, across from The Avenues. The last meeting for this school year will be on April 30, 2010.
